If you should ever be in Germany and if you are interested in calculating machines and in the history of computing (which you are because you are reading this forum) you should come to Bonn. Bonn, the former capital of Germany is an old, small, and quiet town in the west of Germany, at the river Rhine, very close to Cologne. It has an old international university with an Institute for Discrete Mathematics where you will find a very famous and popular collection of historical mechanical calculating machines that today comprises more than 1200 pieces, the largest in the world. The collection is displayed in its own museum called the Arithmeum. This is also where I saw my first Curta. You will find information about the museum under www.arithmeum.de, however, the museum’s webpage does not live up to the fascination of this museum because the site does not display its fine collection online. So if you should be in Germany come to Bonn and visit the museum Arithmeum right in the centre of Bonn. I promise you will surely have lasting memories. Besides, if you are also interested in classical music and if you have some time left you can also visit the museum and birthplace of Beethoven, the composer, it is within walking distance to the Arithmeum.
