Found on deeded acreage while walking my dogs, a canister stuck in the ground a black and gray metallic container. It was obviously run over and almost covered in soil. I imagined it fell off the back of a truck and backed over. When the Internet appeared I searched eBay and found it was a Curta Calculator. What?
No one I've talked to, even a surveyor who was here today, has heard of it. So, what do I with it?
Rusty and calcified. The container is the best part.
Suggestions? I have no interest in restoring.
Some interesting research. I searched County Records and see where my grandmother recorded a mortgage on this property in 1963 which by reviewing Curta serial numbers it was manufactured in 1963, 522xxx. This tells me the Curta was fairly new when it fell onto this property and was lost for 20+ years. I can only imagine the chewing out the guy took for losing it.

As much as I'm curious about the insides and looking at potential damage (or lack of damage....a lot of the components are designed to resist moisture).....maybe the story is the best part. You could mount this in some sort of display/shadow box if you plan on keeping it and have no desire to restore. |

I should have been more curios to what it was and investigated it then. My mother was still alive and possibly could have put more context to it. In 1963 my family would vacation here and who knows I could have found it then and returned it to the owner. My brother and I would have been 14 and explored a lot the 80 acres my grandmother owned. We stayed mostly in the woods and around the ponds. Not so much in open fields.
I now have some "history" as to its manufacture and records to document the property. I'll record what I know and keep it with the Curta. |
