Curta Type 2 and Type 2a - 1949
Based on a Curta brochure from 1949 two Curta II types were planned (type II and type IIa):
[ Curta II 1949 . . . Capacity 11 X 9 X 14 ]
[ Curta IIa 1949 . . . Capacity 12 X 7 X 16 ]
So which type would you prefer?
Curta Type 2 and Type 2a - 1949
PS: please note that these two prototypes are not available for purchase _________________ :: m u r f f

Wow. Never saw 'em before, well done Murff. Again!
Was madly checking my own 500550, 545150 etc etc to see how I'd have missed it, didn't read your "prototype" note until after I'd decided to comment, "What are you talking about?", ha ha. Glad to see these variations though, even if they are unavailable on the market.
Do you have pics of the faces of these machines? _________________ Cheers, Pete |

Given the usual glacial speed of updates to this message board, tomorrow is MORE than soon enough, ha. By the way, I'm still waiting for that other little project to be finished - you'll be the second to know! _________________ Cheers, Pete |

Yes, there was a small series of Curta 1a produced. I don't know if they were available commercially.
Otherwise there were some modifications made like the "silent" Curta (at the moment there is one offered at eBay - but I like the sound of all my Curtas so this is nothing for me). _________________ :: m u r f f

Surely these pictures of the 1949 II and IIa are digitally simulated, right? ...right ?

Not simulated... real photograph and some photoshop work.
These types were never produced and I assume that there are no prototypes around. Interesting is the fact that they were announced in 1949 - four years before the first Curta II was released! _________________ :: m u r f f

Together with a collector colleague I'm researching the existence of the Curta Type II Prototype 12 X 7 X 16.
Some time ago it happens that this (incomplete) prototype was popped up in the Museum Arithmeum, Germany.
[Picture: Arithmeum, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitaet Bonn. --- and, the crank is not an original part of this prototype]
Besides, in a short note the Curta Type II 11 x 9 x 14 and 12 x 7 x 16 was mentioned as "already under construction / in development" (Neue konstruktive Wege im Rechenmaschinenbau - Von Prof. Dr. Karl Holecek, Techn. Hochschule Wien - 19./20. Oktober 1950.)
Another fact is, that at least one other Curta Type II Prototype 12 X 7 X 16 should exist - based on the memories on a personal meeting with Curt Herzstark.
It would be very interesting to find more information about these Curta Type II Prototypes - every hint would be welcome! _________________ :: m u r f f

Curta Type 2a - Prototype P-004 - 12 X 7 X 16 digits - 1949
(I just noticed that there is no link to this gallery....)
Brief description of the Prototype P-004 - Curta Type IIa - 1949
After the introduction of the Curta Type I, customers were asking for a larger-capacity Curta - meaning more digits. Two larger Curtas were
to be launched on the market: a Curta Type II with 11 X 9 X 14 digits - and a Curta Tape IIa 12 X 7 X 16 digits. Both published 1949/1950 in
some brochures by Contina AG - the designation Curta Type IIa is from this brochure and is not mentioned anywhere else. In the biography
by Curt Herzstark, a prototype with 11 X 8 X 15 digits was mentioned - and it's not known whether these and the above-mentioned variant
with 11 X 9 X 14 digits were also realized (maybe it was just an inaccurate recollection...).
The Prototype P-004 - Curta Type IIa - was developed and manufactured in 1949/1950. Most parts in the construction correspond to the
Curta Type 1 - except for the step drum and the related parts.
