I've just been told of an another unfortunate situation in which a Curta enthusiast was scammed in a second chance eBay offering. Every bidder (including myself) on a handsome early Type II had been sent a second chance offer to buy that machine which had sold days earlier. (The Curta happened to have been from outside the country, but this is of little significance.) The email looked like an eBay generated offer that was supposedly sent out because the real high bidder refused to complete the transaction. The scammer was "phishing" for a lower bidder who was willing to take the "unsold" Curta at the price he had bid. The email exchanges all looked as if they went via eBay, but such was not the case. The unsuspecting second chance buyer lost $730 after following "eBay's" suggested money transfer method, which, of course, was not at all covered by eBay's safe harbor protection. The money was delivered via Western Union...and the Curta was never received.
Of interest is that the original seller (a Power Seller with an excellent rating) had no idea someone was using his eBay name and password to mimic his identity. Both the original seller and the real high bidder had already completed the transaction without a hitch. They were as surprised as anyone that this second chance scam was going on.
All this has been relayed to eBay, but nothing can be done.
NEVER RESPOND TO SECOND CHANCE EBAY OFFERS DIRECTLY FROM YOUR EMAIL PROGRAM. Check the "My Messages" section in your "My EBay" page. If the offer you received via regular email is not also in your eBay mailbox, the second chance offer is certainly bogus. If you really want to pursue the offer, send your response directly to the seller of the item via eBay's "Ask Seller a Question" link...AFTER YOU HAVE GONE TO EBAY VIA ENTERING "WWW.EBAY.COM" IN YOUR BROWSER AND THEN TYPING THE ITEM NUMBER IN EBAY'S SEARCH BOX. NEVER USE A LINK IN YOUR EMAIL!!!!
